Just months after Medium expanded its Partner Program to many new countries, allowing more writers to earn from their articles, Towards Data Science (TDS) is leaving the platform and moving to an independent website. What are the implications of this change?🤔
🔹 TDS articles will be free to access
Unlike on Medium, where the content was behind a paywall, TDS's new platform will make all articles open to everyone.
🔹 What about the writers?
If you've written for TDS, your articles may remain on Medium, but they will no longer receive exposure from TDS. If you choose to migrate them to the new platform, you will likely no longer earn from Medium’s Partner Program.
🔹 Less incentive to write?
Writing on Medium has traditionally provided both visibility and financial rewards for popular articles. With TDS moving away, some writers might reconsider whether investing time in content creation without direct compensation is worthwhile.
That said, publishing professional articles remains a powerful personal branding tool. 🌟 It establishes your expertise, positions you as a thought leader, and enhances your credibility. Including a link to your Medium blog in your resume and LinkedIn profile can help strengthen your professional presence 🚀. This is especially true for junior professionals, for whom writing can be a great way to demonstrate knowledge and stand out in a competitive job market. I wrote about this in more detail here
🔹 Will there be a new monetization alternative?
It’s unclear whether the new TDS platform will introduce a revenue-sharing program for writers. However, this shift is unlikely to significantly impact the data science community. Most writers in this field aren’t driven by financial incentives but rather by a passion for sharing knowledge, contributing to the community, and establishing themselves as experts.
📣 What do you think? Will you continue writing for TDS on the new platform, or will you stay on Medium?
